The Ninja Lantern Shark is one of the various deep-sea sharks that can be found 1000 feet deep, off the coast of Central America. They are dark and elusive, and have a remarkable trait: bioluminescent organs! They emit a light greenish glow through their skin, which serves to help camouflage them when in shallow water, and to attract prey when in deeper water.
Sharks often get a bad wrap, even though the risk of a “shark attack” is infinitesimally small. They do not naturally hunt humans, and in truth, we are more of a danger to them, due to the fishing industry. They play such a crucial role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems, it’s vital that they are protected from being pushed to extinction!
